FAMILIES in the North East will be among those who will be targeted as part of a campaign urging women to stop their sons from travelling to Syria, to become involved in terrorism.
Durham Constabulary is among those backing the awareness drive launched nationally, with the North East Counter Terrorism Unit behind efforts in the region.
Police are reaching out to families to encourage them to come forward if they are concerned about the safety of a loved one.
To support the campaign, a leaflet has been designed which outlines the risks and will be shared with communities who are most affected by the crisis in Syria. and issued at ports across the country. Police say the number of people travelling to Syria is increasing.
