A COW almost caused mayhem after running on to a busy commuter route.
Armed police attended Washington Highway on Wednesday afternoon after the farm animal wandered across the A182 Washington Highway.
Drivers were shocked to see the armed police, but it was later revealed that they were there to tackle the cow.
It’s believed the cow made a bid for freedom from a nearby field.
The road was closed while police caught the animal and made sure drivers were safe.
A spokeswoman from Northumbria Police said: “Police received a report at 4.10pm on Wednesday that a cow was loose on the A182.
“The animal was in an agitated state. Officers attended the scene and the road was closed.
“The cow was subsequently destroyed.”
