A POLICE force is recruiting volunteers to offer their time to serve the community. Durham Constabulary is looking for people who can give at least 16 hours each month to serve in its Special Constabulary.
Nick Tompkins, who has served seven years as a special, works full-time for a water survey company and devotes 42 hours a month to being a Special.
Special Sergeant Tompkins, 42, who recently received a chief constable’s commendation for tackling anti-social behaviour, said: “I can’t recommend it enough. It is varied, rewarding and exciting.”
Deputy Chief Constable Michael Banks, said Specials have the same powers and equipment as their colleagues and are a “great asset” to the force. Special Constables can vary their hours and are reimbursed expenses.
The deadline for applications has been extended to 5pm on October 15, at 5pm. Application forms are available www.durham.police.uk.
