Police make fresh appeal over New Year assault in Sunderland

POLICE have put out a fresh appeal for information after a man was found unconscious in Sunderland on New Year’s Day.

Officers were called just after 2am on Thursday, January 1, after members of the public of a man unconscious on the ground near the Murco petrol station, on Pallion New Road.

Officers attended the scene along with the ambulance service where the 25-year-old man was located at a nearby address.

Initial inquiries suggest the victim became involved in an altercation with a group of four men during which he was assaulted suffering a significant head injury. He was in company with another man who was also assaulted but suffered minor injuries only.

The 25-year-old was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the RVI where he remains in a critical condition.

The group of men are described as aged around 25, three were white and one black and all were wearing dark clothing.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been at a New Year’s Eve event being held at the nearby Dexx Skatepark as they may have vital information which may help with the investigation.
