A WASHINGTON man was caught with cannabis in his car.

Edward Pate, of Sulgrave Road, was stopped by police shortly after midnight on January 20.

They noticed his Nissan Almera smelled of the drug and a search of the car revealed some cannabis bush in the glove box.

Pate pleaded guilty to possession of the Class B drug at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Paul Anderson, prosecuting, said he had been given a warning for cannabis possession in 2012.

Robin Ford, defending, said it was “strange” that the 25-year-old had not been offered a caution by cops for the latest offence, despite not having one since 2009.

He added: “He is not a man of any means. He is not working.”

District Judge Roger Elsey ordered he serve a six-month conditional discharge, pay a £15 victim surcharge and £50 towards court costs.
