Police bid to catch phoney scrap vans
POLICE in Sunderland are stopping scrap vans following concerns raised by neighbours.
Officers in the west of the city had received increased reports from residents of vehicles collecting scrap but taking items from gardens without permission.
Police are now carrying out high visibility patrols in the area to offer reassurance. They are also stopping and checking vehicles carrying scrap to ensure they have the correct licence.
Dave Pickett, Neighbourhood Inspector for the area, said: “Genuine scrap metal dealers will ask householders’ permission to take any scrap metal and they should have official documents issued by the local authority.
“I would ask the public to continue to be vigilant.”
