Police appeal over derby-day damage to Metro train

POLICE today appealed to football fans to help them catch a yob who smashed a Metro train window on the day on the Newcastle-Sunderland derby.

The incident took place at about 11.42am on Sunday, December 21, on the 11.22 service from Sunderland.

Pc Nick Cannon said: “The service was extremely busy, carrying a large number of football fans to the Newcastle v Sunderland derby game.

“As the train pulled into Fellgate Metro station one of the train windows was smashed.

Passengers were moved out of the carriage to the rear of the train, which eventually had to be taken out of service to be fixed.

Pc Cannon added: “This was a mindless act of vandalism.

“If you were in the carriage and saw the person responsible, or have any information that may assist our inquiries into this crime, please get in touch.”
