A MAN was conned out of his mobile phone by a driver claiming he was in distress.
On Friday, the man was walking along St Mark’s Road, in Millfield, when a car pulled up next to him.
The driver asked the man if he could use his phone for an emergency call.
The victim handed it over and the driver made a phone call from inside the car before giving the mobile phone back.
As the car drove off, the man realised he had been given a fake phone and the driver had fled with his.
Detectives investigating the theft are now appealing for anyone with information, or anyone who may have been approached in similar circumstances to come forward.
They are also urging people to be on their guard if strangers stop them in the street by people asking for money or personal belongings.”
A spokeswoman said: “Police are advising people to be on their guard and extra cautious if approached unexpectedly in the street.”
