A PENSIONER has been seriously hurt in a hit and run smash.

Police are appealing for information to locate the driver a Peugeot 206 involved in a collision in Blackhills Road, Horden.

Investigators say the car smashed through railings and careered into a shop front and hit the 72-year-old man.

The vehicle then sped off and was later found abandoned.

Officers say the pensioner received leg and head injuries as a result of the accident and was transported to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for treatment.

A Durham Police spokesman said: “The Peugeot was travelling on the road in a southerly direction. This vehicle has lost control whilst negotiating traffic calming measures, crossed the carriageway, colliding with metal railing. “The vehicle has gone through the railings, mounting the pavement, colliding with a shop frontage and a 72 year old male pedestrian.

“The Peugeot has then made off from the scene of the accident and the driver has abandoned the vehicle nearby.

“At this time the driver of the Peugeot is not known and has not been traced.”

The smash happened at 11.30am on Saturday, May 2.

Police want any witnesses to the accident to contact the investigating officers from the Collision Investigation Unit on (0191) 3752159.
