An elderly woman was left terrified after a burglar broke into her home.

The incident happened overnight between 10pm on Wednesday, May 28, and 9am on Thursday, May 29, at a house at Hood Close, when a burglar got in through an unlocked door.

The burglar stole property including watches and a handbag before leaving the property.

The occupant, an elderly woman, was in the house at the time and was left shaken following the incident.

Police carried out extra patrols in the area to reassure local residents and gather information about the burglary.

As part of the ongoing Operation Soundwave - aimed at tackling opportunity thieves and burglars across the force - police are reminding residents to make sure they lock doors and windows.

They should also take crime prevention steps such as installing CCTV, security lighting or an alarm to deter burglars, and report anything unusual or suspicious they see in their community to police straight away.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191, quoting reference 497 29/05/14 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
