AN elderly man is in a critical condition after an assault.
It is believed the elderly man was injured after he was attacked outside his house in Burns Avenue South, near Hetton Road, in Houghton, at 2.30am on Sunday, following banging on his door.
He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where his condition was described as critical. A 30-year-old was arrested by police on suspicion of assault and bailed.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Young said: “We need to establish the full circumstances of what has happened and we are appealing for the public to contact police if they saw or heard anything suspicious.”
