A SEX attacker has been jailed for raping an 11-year-old schoolgirl.

Mark Langton warned his terrified victim he would kill her if she revealed what he had done.

Because the 45-year-old rapist claimed the victim was lying, she had to go through the ordeal of giving evidence against him in court during a trial.

The victim, who is now an adult, told jurors Langton put his hand over her mouth to stop her screaming while he attacked her.

Langton, of Millthorp Close, Leechmere, Sunderland, was found guilty of four charges of rape and three of indecent assault, after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court last December.

Judge Paul Sloan, QC, this week sentenced him to 15 years behind bars.

The judge told him: “She spoke of being terrified, screaming, pleading and saying no, but you covered her mouth and carried on regardless.

“She spoke of that event as being just horrible. She was too scared to tell her mother, she tried to blank it out, she spoke of crying herself to sleep at night, she was too scared to tell anyone of what you were doing.

“It is clear your actions have had, and will continue to have, a significant effect upon her.”

Langton must abide by the terms of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and sign the Sex Offenders’ register for life.

Bob Spragg, defending, said Langton still denies what he did to the girl.

Mr Spragg said: “He maintains his is innocent of the offences and will continue to maintain that.”

The court heard Langton has health problems and has lost one of his legs.

Mr Spragg said Langton has become a target in prison because of his offences.

He said: “He has had to be moved for his safety already.”
