OAP attacked in his home

AN elderly man remains in a critical condition after being assaulted in his home.

The Echo reported yesterday that it was believed the man was attacked outside his house in Burns Avenue South, in Houghton, at 2.30am on Sunday, after banging on his door.

But now Northumbria Police have confirmed that the assault took place inside the victim’s property.

The pensioner was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital to be treated for his injuries, where he was described as being in a critical condition.

A 30-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of assault and bailed.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Young said: “We need to establish the full circumstances of what has happened, and we are appealing for the public to contact police if they saw or heard anything suspicious.”

Witnesses with any information should call Northumbria Police on the non-emergency 101 line or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
