New president at the helm of Sunderland Law Society

A CITY law society has welcomed its new president.

Solicitor Gavin Sword has taken over the role at Sunderland Law Society, from Michael Coulthard.

The 53-year-old was sworn in at the society’s annual general meeting in the city’s Museum and Winter Gardens.

He said: “Sunderland Law Society is one of the oldest in existence, representing the legal profession in Sunderland.

“At present the legal profession faces numerous challenges, with cuts in public funding and increasing regulation and competition.

“If members of the legal profession in Sunderland are to continue to provide legal services to the people of Sunderland, it is important that bodies such as the Sunderland Law Society have a strong voice to put forward representation on behalf of the legal profession.”

Mr Sword, who is married with two children, is a keen athlete and runs with Sunderland Strollers.
