RESIDENTS in a quiet Washington street were stunned by news of a woman being stabbed in her home.
The woman, who was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries, was reported to have been stabbed in Avon Terrace in Columbia.
Police were called to the property, where the window was smashed, at 6.39am today and arrested a 34-year-old man.
A neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I couldn’t believe it when I heard what had happened. He was dragged out of the house in his boxer shorts and she was rushed away to hospital on a stretcher.”
She said there had also been an incident last night when police were called to the property.
“There was a right carry on at about 10.30pm last night with the police here,” she added.
Another householder, who lives in the surrounding area, said: “They have only been there about eight months and the police are always there.
“There’s a lot of children live around here and its awful. This is normally a nice, quiet area.”
Police confirmed that both the arrested man and the injured woman are known to each other.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “The area is currently cordoned off while officers carry out inquiries in the area.”
