A KNIFEMAN was tackled by neighbours after he set off a flare in a Sunderland street.

Police were called to Fordfield Road, Ford Estate, at about 1.35am yesterday.

After the man was challenged by people in the street, he made off in a silver car, smashing into other vehicles.

Officers believe the man had been involved in an earlier altercation at an address in the street before this incident.

He was white, tall, in his late 20s and wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.

He drove off in the direction of Pennywell.

Inquiries are ongoing to trace the man and police are keen to speak to any witnesses.

Chief Inspector Dave Willett, from Sunderland Area Command, said: “Those involved in this disturbance were known to each other and we don’t believe a threat is posed to the wider public by this person.

“Officers will be patrolling the area and anyone with concerns should speak to them.”

People can contact police on 101, extension 69191, quoting log number 155 18/05/14, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
