POLICE investigating a murder have named a woman found dead at a flat in Boldon Colliery

The body of Gemma Finnigan, 24, of Church View, Boldon Colliery, was discovered at 11.05am on Friday.

She was declared dead at the scene.

A 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder today, remains in custody, helping police with their inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Barron, who is leading the enquiry, said: “We want to hear from anyone who saw Gemma or who was in contact with her between Thursday, September 12, and Friday, September 13.

“Also we would ask anyone who was in the area of Church View, Boldon over that same period who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or out of the ordinary to call police straightaway.

“This information will help our inquiry to build up a picture of what happened to Gemma in the period leading up to her death.

“Officers believe those involved were known to each other.”

Chief Superintendent Ian Dawes, South Tyneside area commander said: “Extra officers are in the area around Church View to speak to local residents and provide reassurance.

“If anyone has any concerns, or to pass any information onto police, they can speak to officers in the area face to face or by ringing 101. People can also pass information on anonymously via Crimestoppers if they wish on 0800 555 111.”
