‘Monkey chant’ accused pleads not guilty over Sunderland vs West Brom racism allegations

A BLACK Cats fan charged after police investigated reports of racist behaviour at a Sunderland match has pleaded not guilty.

Liam Jones, 21, of East Vines, was charged with section five racially aggravated offence.

Mr Jones was arrested after the Echo printed a photograph of the Sunderland fan apparently making a monkey gesture at Romelu Lukaku when the Belgian striker scored for West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light

Inquiries were carried out into a report of racist behaviour and Jones was subsequently arrested and charged in relation to the incident.
