THIEVES broke into a house and stole more than £40,000-worth of goods, including two cars.

The burglary happened in Leander Drive, in Boldon Colliery, after the intruders got into the detached house through the back door.

A grey Mercedes A-Class, registration number LM55 BXX, worth up to £16,500 and a silver Mercedes C-Class, registration number VX06 WHB, worth about £26,000, were stolen from the drive at the front of the property.

Also taken was jewellery, a Gucci watch, two Apple iPads, cash and a briefcase.

Once inside the house, the burglars found house and car keys hanging near the front door, let themselves out and made off in the cars.

Neighbours in the quiet cul-de-sac spoke today of their shock at the break-in.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s normally so quiet round here. I can’t believe there has been a burglary.”
