A man is beginning an eight month jail sentence after turning on a police officer called when he began to trash a bar.

Durham Crown Court heard the 27-year-old threatened staff at the Hat and Feathers pub in Church Street after being refused service, before smashing some of the pub’s fittings.

Police were called and the first officer to arrive caught up with Thomas jogging away from the pub.

Thomas then attacked the Pc, leaving him with injuries including a broken nose which had to be reset, damage to his teeth and a trapped nerve.

The officer, who is based in Seaham, is continuing to receive rehabilitation but has returned to light duties.

Thomas, of Stockton Road, was jailed yesterday after admitting assault causing actual bodily harm and affray.
