A MAN has appeared before magistrates after a pensioner was robbed in the street.

Andrew Haikney, 26, of Railway Terrace, South Hylton, is accused of robbing a 72-year-old woman in Annie Street, in Roker, on March 11.

The woman was walking along the road when a man tried to grab her handbag.

It is alleged that the pensioner fought back and there was a struggle, causing her to fall to the ground while the robber fled with her bag.

She suffered cuts and bruises.

Haikney appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody until an appearance at Newcastle Crown Court next month.
