Man in court after house smash

Damage to a house on Newcastle road after a car crashed through the front garden wall.

Damage to a house on Newcastle road after a car crashed through the front garden wall.

A MAN has appeared in court after a car ploughed into a house in Sunderland and hit a gas main.

Neil Bater has been charged with stealing the car and driving it while under the influence of alcohol.

Residents were evacuated when a car hit the house in Newcastle Road, Monkwearmouth, at about 2.20am on Tuesday.

Bater, 40, of Penrith Avenue, Fulwell, appeared before Sunderland magistrates yesterday where he entered no plea to charges of causing an accident where damage was caused to property, making threats to kill and threats to damage by fire.

He also faces charges of driving while disqualified, using a vehicle without insurance, driving with excess alcohol, as well as two offences of assault and one of criminal damage.

Bater was given conditional bail until a second hearing in December, when the case will be committed to Newcastle Crown Court.
