A man has been remanded by magistrates after he was charged with possession of a knife.

Dean Philp, 30, of Tudor Grove, Plains Farm, Sunderland, appeared before Sunderland Magistrates’ Court today to face the allegation.

He was remanded in custody and will next appear before Newcastle Crown Court on Friday, August 21.

It follows a disturbance in the early hours of yesterday morning in Shoreham Square in Springwell, when armed police were called to the cul-de-sac.

Northumbria Police said three people, two men aged 29 and 30, and a 19-year-old woman, were arrested in connection with the incident.

No further action will be taken by police against the 29-year-old and woman.

A spokesman said the inquires began following a call to Portslade Road in Pennywell at 9.59pm on Wednesday following concerns raised after a man was seen with a knife, with officers later called to Shoreham Square.
