A MAN has appeared in court after being charged with a rape dating back nearly 30 years.
Stephen Crawford is alleged to have attacked the schoolgirl at a Washington industrial estate between January 1985 and December 1986.
The 51-year-old, of no fixed abode, appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where he did not enter a plea.
The girl, who was under 16 at the time she said she was attacked, cannot be named for legal reasons.
Crawford was granted technical unconditional bail. His case will be dealt with at Newcastle Crown Court, with the first hearing on April 25.
