A MAN is being questioned on suspicion of murder after a woman’s body was found in a flat.
The 32-year-old man was arrested yesterday after the discovery in Church View, Boldon Colliery.
Police were called to the scene just after 11am, after concern was raised for the woman, thought to be in her 20s.
A 67-year-old neighbour said the woman’s sister made a 999 call. “She knocked on our door and spoke to my daughter when she couldn’t get an answer at the flat,” he said.
“That must have been after 9.30am, because I had gone out.
“My daughter said she was worried.”
Scores of police and crime scene investigators surrounded the gable end flat, which was taped off, and made door-to-door inquiries. Those living nearby said the street, just over 350 yards from Hedworth Lane Primary School, was usually quiet.
The 67-year-old resident, a retired supermarket worker who has lived in Church View for 37 years, said the man and woman thought to be involved “kept themselves to themselves”.
“It was quiet last night,” he said. “Maybe a few kids around, but nothing after that.” Detective Chief Inspector Christina Barrett, of Northumbria Police, said: “We want to hear from anyone who was in the area of Church View, Boldon, between Thursday and yesterday, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, or out of the ordinary.
“Officers believe those involved were known to each other.”
