Man assaulted by gang of burglars in Sunderland flat

A MAN was assaulted after a gang of burglers forced their way into his flat.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the aggravated burglary, which took place in Princess Street, Thornhill, on Friday at 10.45pm.

A group of seven men or male teenagers, all wearing dark clothing, forced their way into the flat and assaulted a 22-year-old man with sticks. They also stole a red Adidas wallet and a blue moneybox from the flat.

The resident suffered cuts to his head and ran to a nearby public house to call for help. The group of offenders then made off from the scene before police arrived.

The injured man went to hospital for treatment and was later released.

Officers are carrying out enquiries in the area and additional officers are on patrol to reassure the community.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious is asked to contact them.
