Man arrested over Sunderland assault

A MAN is in a serious condition in hospital after being assaulted in a Sunderland street.

The 21-year-old victim was found by police officers following a disturbance in Edwin Street, Pallion, at 1.30am yesterday.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment, where his condition is described as serious but stable.

A 20-year-old man has now been arrested by detectives in connection with the attack.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the assault to contact them.

Detective Sergeant Trevor Whitehead said: “We would like to speak to anyone who was in Edwin Street at the time of this incident.

“We know that there were quite a lot of people around at the time, and we would urge anyone who witnessed this incident to contact us.

“Extra patrols are in the area as part of the investigation and to reassure the public.”
