A MAN has been arrested after Sunderland Minster was targeted in an alleged attempt to steal a lightning conductor.

The 27-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted theft after the incident at the High Street West building, which happened on November 22.

Reverend Martin Anderson, who had been praying in the Minster, spotted a man climbing up a drainpipe trying to snatch the copper conductor, which stretches to the top of the church.

The man has been released on bail by Northumbria Police, pending further inquiries.
