A MAN has been arrested after a 10-year-old girl was touched on the leg in Washington.

The girl was walking along a footpath behind Lambton Village Centre at 8.50am last Friday when a man is said to have approached her.

He is alleged to have touched her leg and spoken to her, before she ran away. The man then walked off towards Holly Park, Oxclose.

This morning, a 25-year-old man was arrested and he is being questioned by police in connection with the incident.

Officers have stressed they are still eager to speak to anybody who saw a man described as being in his late 40s, 5ft 7ins tall, of medium build, and wearing a black suit and a cream beanie style hat and speaking with a local accent.

Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Stewart said: “Although incidents like this are unusual in this area, we understand that it will cause concern to people and neighbourhood officers are conducting extra patrols to provide reassurance to the community.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
