A MAN from Murton has been arrested after a body was found in field.
The 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery made on land in Willington, near Crook, at 1am today.
The body of the 42-year-old man was discovered by police in a field to the rear of Willington High Street when they responded to information which had been passed on to officers.
The suspect is in custody at Peterlee Police Station, where he is being interviewed by detectives from Durham Constabulary’s Major Crime Team.
Scene preservation is in place around the high street area of Willington to allow for a forensic examination and officers are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area.
A post mortem examination will be carried out later on today.
The man leading the investigation, Detective Superintendent Kevin Weir, said: “I can confirm we have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a man’s body in the early hours of this morning.
“We do believe this is an isolated incident and we currently have a suspect in custody.
“Over the coming hours there will be much police activity in Willington, I would ask for the patience of residents in that area while the scene preservation remains in place.”
