A KNIFEMAN who fired a flare gun in a Sunderland street left behind a trail of destruction as he smashed into other vehicles when he drove off.
Police are combing the area in an attempt to find the culprit, said to be a tall white male in his late 20s, who was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.
Officers were called to Fordfield Road at 1.35am on Sunday morning following reports that a man with a knife was setting off a fare gun.
After being challenged by passers-by, he made off in a silver car, damaging parked vehicles as drove away towards Pennywell.
Police believe the man had been involved in an earlier altercation at an address in the street before this incident.
Chief Inspector Dave Willett, from Sunderland Area Command, said: “Luckily no-one has been harmed as a result of this disturbance and only damage was caused.
“Those involved in this disturbance were known to each other and we don’t believe a threat is posed to the wider public by this person.
“Detectives are carrying out further enquiries today to find the man responsible.
“Anyone who witnessed the disturbance or believes they may have seen the man following it is asked to come forward.
“Officers will be patrolling the area and anyone with concerns should speak to them.”
