THE number of women looking for work on Wearside has fallen for the first time this year.
There were 3,050 woman claiming Jobseeeker’s Allowance in Sunderland last month, down from 3,106 in May.
The number of men claiming the benefit was also down, from 6,523 in May to 6,460 last month.
Although the number of claimants has risen occasionally, the overall trend has been downwards since the depth of the recession in May 2009, when there were 11,203 people claiming the benefit across the Sunderland City Council area.
There was also good news on youth unemployment, with the number of people aged between 18 and 24 claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance dropping for a second month.
There were 3,255 people claiming the benefit last month.
Unemployment across the North East dropped by nearly 7,000 in the second quarter of the year.
