Inquest opened over Sunderland double-death mystery

POLICE have yet to find out what caused the deaths of two pensioners discovered in the bedroom of their Sunderland home.

An inquest into James and May Stokoe’s deaths was opened and adjourned at the city’s Coroner’s Court yesterday.

During the brief hearing, Detective Inspector Paul Woods, from Northumbria Police’s Major Crime Team, confirmed the cause of the deaths had “yet to be ascertained”.

Detectives told Sunderland Coroner Derek Winter there was no other people involved after the pensioners, both 79, were found at the house they shared in Hylton Castle Road last Wednesday.

Mr Winter said: “This is a complex inquiry with a number of different aspects.
