A GIRLFRIEND punched so hard by her partner that her eye exploded today told how the attack has ruined her life.

Mark Phythian was jailed for four years for the assault which left Sandra Banks’s right eye “dead”.

Phythian of Musgrove Terrace, Washington, who has past convictions for attacks on Sandra, denied causing grievous bodily harm, assault and acting in breach of a restraining order, but was found guilty by a jury of all charges.

Sandra said she is now facing the possibility of losing her right eye completely.

The 47-year-old is now living in a secret location, but she broke her silence for the Echo in a bid to help others like her. She said: “Every time I look in the mirror I’m forced to remember what he did to me.

“The horror of this will be with me for the rest of my life.

“My eye has no function at all now.

“The doctors have told me it is basically dead and I will eventually need to have it taken out.

“That’s half my sight gone completely.

“It was a sense of relief seeing him get sent to jail.

“I wanted to be there to show him he has no power over me anymore. He can’t hurt me anymore.

“I just wish he had been locked up for longer.

“I wanted him to get a life sentence. I have to live with this for the rest of my life and he should have to too.”

Sandra described how she heard a massive “pop” before blood flooded down her face following the blow from Phythian.

The couple had been rowing at her home on Sandra’s birthday on February 22 this year. Phythian had ordered Sandra to get back with him following his release from prison for a previous attack on her.

Despite being put behind bars for four years, Sandra is now warning women across Wearside to be on the lookout for Phythian when he is finally released.

Sandra said: “Other women need to watch out for this man, because he will definitely do it again.

“The judge said he was a danger and I think his behaviour and language in the courtroom proved that.

“Everyone finally got to see his true colours, after he put on such a nice, fake front for the jury.

“I hope other women take some comfort from my case and realise if you come forward and tell the police you will be believed and you will be helped.

“If my story gives even one woman the courage to come forward I will be happy.”
