A TOTAL of 379 children were victims of sex crimes across the Northumbria Police force area.
They were subjected to horrific crimes including rape, incest and prostitution, children’s charity the NSPCC said today. Some 121 had not reached their 13th birthday and eight were under the age of five.
In County Durham, 253 children were victims of sex crimes between April 2010 and March 2011.
Pat Buckley, of the NSPCC, said: “Many of these distressing offences are committed on extremely young and helpless children, who may not understand what is happening to them and are unable to ask for help.”
