TWO farms and four homes were raided at dawn today as part of an investigation into suspected unlicensed puppy farms.

Operation Waxhill brought together 50 police officers and 26 RSPCA inspectors as they worked alongside vets to target the East Durham addresses.

Just before 7am, Bracken Hill Livery Farm and Swan Castle Farm, along with houses in Kier Hardie Terrace, Bruce Glazier Terrace and Bracken Ridge, Shotton Colliery, and a house in Windsor Terrace, Haswell, were searched.

The inquiry is based on reports of puppies being bought online from what are believed to be unlicensed puppy farms.

Police say new owners have raised concerns the pets fallen seriously ill.
