A horse has been slashed as it grazed in a field in Sunderland.
The mare named Pepsi was in a field in Stoneygate Farm, in Houghton-le-Spring, when it was attacked during the day on Tuesday June 23.
The animal was left with a deep gash to its chest which had cut through muscle and required stitches.
The horse is said to be recovering well.
The attack happened between 9am and 2pm.
Neighbourhood Inspector Lisa Musgrove said: “This was a senseless attack on a horse which has caused distress to the animal and the owner. Police are investigating the incident and are appealing for witnesses.”
