Heroin addict’s attempted aftershave theft from Sunderland Debenhams

A MAN tried to steal aftershave from a Sunderland store.

David Bell was spotted by security guards in the perfume department of Debenhams.

They watched the 30-year-old peel the security tag off a bottle of Burberry fragrance then go to leave the store.

He told them he had gone into the shop to steal, as he had no money, but had put the £50 fragrance down as he realised he was being watched.

Bell pleaded guilty to attempted theft at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Ian Haq, defending, said Bell, of Titian Avenue, South Shields, was battling heroin addiction but was on a methadone programme.

He said: “Clearly it is the drug issue that underpins his offending.”

Magistrates adjourned the case for probation reports.
