A gang of four raiders left a couple in hospital after an aggravated burglary in Sunderland

Four attackers, two men and two women, entered a house in Tilbury Road, Thorney Close, Sunderland through an unlocked door and attacked two of the occupants with a hammer.

They left in what is believed to be a silver BMW car parked nearby. Nothing is believed to have been stolen during the incident.

A man aged 30, and woman aged 26, were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with minor injuries where they were discharged following treatment.

Police were called to the house at 7.28pm yesterday, and are now carrying out house-to-house enquiries as an investigation takes place.

Northumbria Police said extra officers are on patrol in the area to reassure the community.
