THE funeral of a man found dead at the bottom of cliffs, after escaping from police custody, will be held next week.
Father-of-two Karl Carson, from Boldon Colliery, was discovered at the foot of Marsden cliffs following a search of the area in the early hours of last Sunday.
The 26-year-old had escaped from a police car after being arrested by officers called to deal with a disturbance in the car park of the Marsden Grotto pub.
Mr Carson, from Boldon Colliery, had been placed inside a police vehicle but as officers went to arrest a second man, police say he escaped and ran off. His body was discovered at the bottom of the cliffs at 1.03am.
The incident was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) but has been now been passed back to Northumbria Police to conduct its own inquiry.
The funeral of Mr Carson, a keen footballer, who played for Boldon CA, will be held at South Shields Crematorium, John Reid Road, South Shields on Thursday at 11.30am.
The family have requested family flowers only and donations in lieu to a nominated charity which has yet to be announced.
