THE death of a South Tyneside footballer found at the bottom of cliffs will not be investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Karl Carson was discovered at the foot of Marsden cliffs in the early hours of Sunday morning after escaping from police custody.

The 26-year-old, who played for Boldon CA, had been arrested following a fight in the car park of the Marsden Grotto pub at around 12.34am.

He was placed inside a police vehicle but as officers went to arrest a second man, he escaped and ran off.

A search was carried out to find him but tragically at 1.03am his body was found at the bottom of the cliffs.

Because of the contact between officers and Mr Carson before he died, Northumbria Police referred the incident to the IPCC.

However, the IPCC has decided it will not be investigating the matter and has passed the case back to Northumbria Police to conduct its own inquiry.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “We can now confirm that the IPCC have decided that this investigation will remain with Northumbria Police to carry out as a local investigation.

“Officers are continuing to provide support to the family of Mr Carson at this difficult time. Inquiries are continuing in this matter.”
