TWO car fires which took place in the early hours of this morning are being treated as arson.

Officers on patrol in the Hendon area of Sunderland spotted flames coming from a van at about 1am.

Firefighters from Sunderland Central station were called to the blaze, which left the Citroen van badly damaged.

No-one was in the van at the time.

A crew from Sunderland Central also dealt with a second blaze an hour later.

Firefighters were called to Timber Beach Road in Southwick at 2am, after a call to say a Fiat taxi was on fire.

The car was completely destroyed. The driver, a man in his 20s, was unhurt.

Police are now looking into both fires, which are not believed to be linked.
