Failed Post Office robber wielded bladed mop handle

A MAN attempted to rob a Post Office while armed with a blade-studded mop handle.

Police are appealing for information after the attempted theft from a Post Office in Airedale Gardens, Hetton, at about 8.25am this morning.

Officers received a report that a man had entered the Post Office wearing a motorcycle helmet and carrying a mop handle with two Stanley knife blades attached to it.

He put the handle to one side and stayed in the shop for around 15-minutes. He then took off the helmet and went outside before going back in the shop and trying to steal money from under the Post Office hatch. However he made off from the scene after his attempts were unsuccessful.

Investigations into the incident are continuing and police are keen to speak to any witnesses.
