THE Dean of Durham’s wife was praised in court for confronting a burglar who broke into their cathedral home.
Jenny Sadgrove, who is married to the Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove, was shocked to discover David Stephen Clark at her husband’s desk in the study at the Deanery, next to Durham Cathedral.
At Durham Crown Court Paul Lee, prosecuting, said: “Mrs Sudgrove approached the intruder, took a bag he was holding and removed her husband’s wallet.
“She said he shouldn’t be there and told him to leave, which he promptly did.”
Despite Mrs Sadgrove getting back her husband’s wallet, they later discovered 200 euros had been stolen from the desk.
Clark was recognised by Mrs Sadgrove on CCTV footage from the cathedral’s restaurant.
He was arrested at a bed and breakfast in Langley Moor when police recovered the key.
Clark, 29, of North Brancepeth Terrace, Langley Moor, was jailed Clark for 16 months.
Recorder Peter Makepeace said: “Mrs Sadgrove showed extraordinary fortitude and is clearly a very plucky lady indeed.”
