A NIGHT-TIME sweep of the streets was launched by police as they targeted underage drinkers.
Peterlee Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out the checks as part of Operation Staysafe, a campaign which aims to deal with concerns about groups of young people gathering, drinking and causing antisocial behaviour.
During the evening, a 15-year-old boy was taken to safety after he was found drunk and carrying five cans of lager in an area of the dene off Burnhope Way in the town. Sergeant Jim Peel, who led the operation, said: “The 15-year-old in question was given alcohol education and counselling from the Youth Offending Service. This intervention work forms part of our Community Alcohol Project, which aims reduce the harms caused through alcohol misuse.”
The Friday session also involved youth workers from the One Point Service.
