A female police officer suffered bruising as a drunk man lashed out at her.

The incident happened after police were called to reports of a number of drunk people on Hylton Road on May 16, Sunderland magistrates heard.

Prosecutor Paul Anderson said Lee Brown, 33, took exception to police speaking to him and pushed a male officer with his hands on his chest.

“The other officer intervened,” Mr Anderson said.

“He was flaying his arms around, and hit out at the officer on the right-hand side of her face with the back of his hand.”

Brown, of John Candlish Road, Millfield, was arrested and admitted to two counts of assaulting a police officer.

George Tilley, defending, said Brown had hit out by accident and added that he should have co-operated with police.

Brown was fined £290, with £100 compensation, a £29 victim surcharge and £150 criminal courts charge.
