A BOOZE thief stole 10 cans of as ‘an act of bravado’ after he and pals and ran out of drink after a barbecue.
Callum Hughes, offered to got into the Co-op store in Shiney Row to get more alcohol at 9.55pm on September 5, despite having no cash.
Sunderland Magistrates Court heard the 20-year-old, of nearby Hunter Street, had been drinking since 1pm.
Hughes was spotted on CCTV, taking the cans of Fosters – valued at £9.25 – and arrested. He pleaded guilty to theft.
Philippa Wylie, mitigating, said: “This was nothing sophisticated. It was an act of bravado. He was drunk, there as probably encouragement from his friends.”
Hughes was handed a conditional discharge for 12 months and told to pay £85 costs, a £15 victim surcharge and £9.25 in compensat- ion.
