Drunk abused staff at Sunderland Royal Hospital

A DRUNK was arrested after loitering around an ambulance outside an accident and emergency department.

Andrew Coleman had just been told to leave Sunderland Royal Hospital after he was abusive to staff shortly before 1am on Thursday, Sunderland magistrates heard.

The 40-year-old, of no fixed address, had been admitted to the Kayll Road hospital, having taken an overdose after his 12-year relationship ended. But 20 minutes after being ejected, Coleman was seen showing an interest in an ambulance outside and an altercation with a security guard followed.

He was arrested and pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly.

Fining him £160, District Judge Roger Elsey said: “This was disgraceful behaviour. Staff at the hospital have enough to put up with.”
