Drug addict stole phone on his way to answer bail at Sunderland police station

A DRUG user stole a mobile phone on his way to the police station to answer bail for another theft.

Michael Gill, of Cairo Street, Hendon, Sunderland, was on police bail for stealing three bottles of shampoo and conditioner from Home Bargains in the city on February 27.

On his way to Gill Bridge police station, the 31-year-old was caught taking an iPhone 4 from an office of Fortune Fortune Chinese supermarket in the city’s Fawcett Street on March 13.

At Sunderland Magistrates’ Court yesterday, he pleaded guilty to both counts of theft.

Tom Morgan, defending, said Gill’s drug use had led to him being thrown out by his girlfriend.

He said: “He tells me he is now using crack to the extent his partner has kicked him out of the family home.”

Mr Morgan added: “He spent four or five months offence-free after being released from custody, but unfortunately has started using crack again.”

The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports.
