A MAN drove through a fence and hit a car after taking a wrong turn.

Paul Shikle smashed his Renault Clio through the fence in Grindon, Sunderland, damaging a Citroen.

The 31-year-old, of Cockermouth Road, in Sunderland, ran off from the crash in Gartland Road, but rang police an hour later and confessed to what he had done.

Shikle appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident on November 16.

John McGlone, prosecuting, said: “He had picked up his mates, who were drunk.

“His mates told him to turn left and the road went right. He went through the fence and into a garage.”

Shikle was fined £130 and banned from driving for four weeks.

He was also ordered to pay a £130 fine, £85 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
